Class Music

Children are surrounded by music at Falkner House. All children have class music lessons twice a week from Reception to Year 6. We cover music history and the lives of the great composers, explore major works and study different genres. Music theory is introduced, as is composition. There is a major emphasis on choral work.

Individual Music

Our impressive individual music programme means that most children from Year 1 upwards take lessons with one of our seven specialist musicians. Children are able to choose from a huge variety of instruments including the violin, viola, cello, piano, recorder, clarinet, flute, trumpet, and saxophone. Children are prepared for ABRSM exams with aural training and rehearsals. For the older children, there are two string orchestras, one wind band and a choir as well as a number of chamber groups.

By playing in assembly, informal and formal concerts children learn how to perform solo and in concert with others. We believe passionately that this develops confidence and self-esteem. Performing should be enjoyable!

Drama

Drama is integral to the curriculum. We value the confidence it instils, the teamwork it develops and the fun it allows. From the Reception Nativity to the Year 6 Leavers’ Play, there are frequent class productions where all have a chance to shine. Periodically we put on a whole school production, eg. Oliver!, Bugsy Malone, Joseph, and The Sound of Music.
