In science on Monday, Year 5 explored the importance of using oil to lubricate the moving parts of machines by using the jelly and chopstick challenge. Some girls found it very tricky to lift the jelly as their chopsticks skills were put to the test with jelly sticking fast to the plate. This meant that there was a lot of friction. Friction is a force which acts between two surfaces and it slows things down or, as in this case, stops things from moving. Once they put the oil on the jelly, it moved much more easily because there was much less friction. However, it was fun watching some people chasing the slippery jelly round the plate.
