In science this week, Year 5 have been learning about chemical changes. We explored the chemistry of elephant toothpaste – not really! This is a reaction caused by yeast breaking down hydrogen peroxide. It is safe and fun. The detergent froths -up and catches the oxygen bubbles. The food colouring makes it look like toothpaste. The temperature rose from 21 to 43 degrees, making this an exothermic reaction. It releases heat energy. We have also made a balloon inflate as if by magic, using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. The gas is carbon dioxide.
Both of these experiments are safe to do at home. Perhaps you could try them over the half term?
Have fun. Mrs Kelly
