In science, Year 4 made a model digestive system to learn how the organs help us to break down and absorb food.

They put some banana, biscuits, water and vinegar into a plastic bag. They had to break up the biscuits and banana with their hands which represented the action of the teeth chewing food. They crushed and mixed the contents in the bag just like the stomach churns and liquidises food. Next they snipped a corner of the bag and poured the contents into a stocking, whereupon they squeezed the milky liquid out. This is what the small intestine does- it absorbs the digested food into the blood. After that, the solids were emptied into a paper cup with a hole in the bottom. This is the large intestine which collects the waste products ready to be removed from the body. It was a fun lesson as you can see below.
