This week we travelled up north to bonny Scotland where we continued focusing on the fairy tale ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We looked at a few newer versions of the story with alternative endings such as ‘The Gingerbread Girl’ by Lisa Ernest.
We had a creative week with the children retelling and re-enacting the original story, creating their own versions in ‘wee granny’s kitchen’ and with the small world toys.
We enjoyed counting out and matching objects in twos with the gingerbread man memory game and decorating a gingerbread friend finger puppet each to ‘run, run…’.
The children thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Scottish farm animals where the Gingerbread Man not only had to be wary of the fox but also Nessie living in the loch.
On Thursday the children arrived to the sound of bagpipes. We enjoyed a day filled with laughter, dancing and shortbread as we celebrated Burns Day; honouring the poet Robbie Burns. In the morning fun was had by all as we joined the whole school in the playground in an energetic reel; ‘The Dashing White Sergeant’. That afternoon we kept up the energy reeling inside and were joined by Miss Jacky and Mr Bailey for dance to more Scottish music!
Today we baked our own delicious gingerbread men using the recipe given by our resident celebrity chef Mrs ter Averst (the Falkner House art and DT teacher), who came second in the gingerbread house competition on Channel 4’s, Kirstie’s Homemade Christmas 2020!
