This week in Nursery we explored why most leaves change colours in autumn and matched a handful of them to their trees. We looked at the shape of leaves; comparing, matching and describing their shapes.

There was much excitement on Tuesday as we took the school bus from Brechin Place to Kensington Gardens for our autumn adventure. Fun was had by all as we searched for and collected natural treasures we found in the park. To the delight of both the children and their teachers we came upon fallen trees. Most clambered up and either walked or crawled along the trunk before leaping off the end. We enjoyed spotting robins and crows, the odd spider web and giant slug and watching the squirrels digging in the ground and racing up trees.

Leaves, conkers and acorns were foraged for and used to create leaf people inspired by the book ‘Leaf Man’ by Lois Ehlert, along with other natural and natural looking resources.

The children enjoyed small world play under the stairs with characters from the story ‘Percy the Park Keeper; After the Storm’ by Nick Butterworth.

In the number room leaves and ladybirds were counted out, studied and sung about. The green sensory tray was explored and green works of art were created.

Half term: 16th – 27th October

Half term has arrived, this is a good opportunity to take plenty of rest. We would strongly encourage children to practice putting on their own shoes and socks during this time.

The Nursery team wish you all a wonderful half term break and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures when Nursery starts again Monday 30th October.
