This week in nursery we focused on wild animals from south Africa. We looked at a few of these animal families and were introduced to some of the different collective nouns ranging from the familiar pride of lions and herd of elephants to the more unusual, dazzle of zebras and clan of hyenas. Under the stairs our nook transformed into the African plains. There was a lot of laughter as the children dressed as either wild animals or explorers, watching the wildlife through binoculars. Hyena songs could be heard coming from the number room as too the song from the book ‘The Ugly Five’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne was retold using finger puppets. In the letter room each child drew a zebra and in both rooms the world globes and floor puzzles were scoured as we searched for the African continent in search of South Africa.
