This week we focused on another amazing insect, the honeybee. We looked at the important roles the queen, drones and worker bees have in the hive. Though bees may be small, they play a big role in keeping our planet healthy.
The children enjoyed a busy bee week playing with a verity of bee themed activities. Our nook under the stairs became a ‘beehive’ where the worker bees tended to the babies and kept the hive tidy – ish. We found and counted bees that were hiding in amongst the ovals and numbers one to five and created a colony of bees to buzz around our friendship tree in the letter room.
In the letter room, our corner became a kitchen where many delicious meals were prepared and tea was served. And, of course, we cannot focus on the sound ‘k’ without learning about the unique and endangered bird from New Zealand, the kiwi! The children have learnt many interesting facts about this shy, flightless, nocturnal bird, that nests in burrows underground, has whiskers like a cat and has nostrils at the end of its beak!
A lot of fun was had as the morning group participated in the Year 6 Bazaar. Year 6 outdid themselves creating fun games and challenges for all of use to enjoy. All the money collected went to Battersea Cats and Dogs Home – a charity chosen by the Year 6 girls.
