This week we continued focusing on the artist Frida Kahlo. Inspired by her art and stories written about her, such as ‘Frida Kahlo: Little People, Big Dreams’, by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and ‘Frida Kahlo, by Sophis Lópas, the children painted their own self-portraits at the easel.
Under the stairs, La Casa Azul, continued to be a big hit. Many parties were enjoyed in Frida’s blue home! Frida’s love of flowers could be found in both classrooms, from games and counting activities to the scented sensory flower garden.
In the number room we focused on semi circles. Fun, imagination and creativity could be seen and heard coming from the shape tray where the semi circles and half spheres were transformed into cakes, towns and ephemeral art.
In the letter room we focused on the sound ‘w’. The children painted watermelons inspired by the last painting Frida ever painted, ‘Viva la Vida’, ‘Long Live Life’. Laughter and delighted shrieks could be heard as the children poured water into the waterwheel, splashing down onto the boats below.
We have enjoyed a celebration of animals this week. On Friday we celebrated Falkner House Pet Day. There was a great selection of dogs of varying heights and breeds, guinea pigs, fish and garden snails. The parade ended with the ‘two legged’ fury and feathered creatures showing off their plumage, soft coats, tails and pointed or floppy ears.
In the afternoon we were treated to a smaller parade as Kiki’s ragdoll cat, Citron and Sahani’s husky, Loki came to visit Nursery.
