This week we introduced our exciting new topic of the term ‘Shapes in Art’.

Our first artist we are focusing on is the Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, also known as the ‘Princess of Polka Dots’.We found a true appreciation for Yayoi ‘s love of all things polka dotted.

Our nook under the stairs became a home dedicated to Yayoi, showing some of her works of art and her fondness for pumpkins!

In the number room we focused on number one and the shape, circle.  The children explored the ‘Yayoi inspired’ circle tray and enjoyed creating their own circle art both with collage materials and at the paint easel.Everyone cut their own big, medium and small circle to create a collaborative Kandinsky styled ‘Squares and Concentric Circles’ wall art.

In the letter room we focused on the sound ‘m’. Inspired by Yayoi’s art, the children created their own polka dotted mushrooms, now up on display in the letter room.

On Wednesday we celebrated St George’s Day. The children arrived to see red and white bunting decorating Nursery along with red roses, robins and lions. After being introduced to one of the many versions of the legend of ‘kind, brave and well mannered’ St George, the children enjoyed retelling their own versions with the story props, colouring pictures of knights, princesses and dragons and looking at story books about dragons. We all enjoyed a very English tea party with scones, cucumber and strawberries!
