We ended this terms theme by reading the book ‘Recycling’, by Lorna Freytag and ‘Ten Things I Can Do to Help My World’, by Melanie Walsh. We discussed why we need to look after our planet and what small changes we can make to help save and heal it – a thread that has gently weaved itself throughout much of our topic this term. This message has clearly resonated with the children – comments overheard: “Use less plastic, use a paper bag instead of a plastic bag”. “Don’t cut the trees down because the animals won’t have a home.” “Plant more trees because of the oxygen.” “We have to clean the rubbish out of the sea because the animals will think it’s food and they will get sick.” “We can use paper instead of plastic.”.

In the letter room the focus was on the three R’s, reduce, reuse, recycle. The children made robots using recycled materials.  Whilst in the nook under the stairs, the children had fun dressing up in hard hats and high vis vests as they sorted food and paper into bins at the recycling station.

On Thursday, we were visited by the Eco Monitors from the main school; Lora, Charlotte and Clémence. They came down to share with Nursery the importance of looking after our world, starting from where we live and at school. After sharing their mission of going to Battersea Park with gloves and litter tongs and collecting four rubbish bags of rubbish that people had left behind, they spoke about what we can do in Nursery, such as using two sides of a sheet of paper when drawing, turning the tap off once we have finished washing our hands and only using one piece of paper towel to dry our hands.
