It has been a fun filled and busy week! Continuing with ‘Our World’ topic, we focused on ‘Deserts’. After revisiting our continents song, we looked at the globe and discovered that every continent has a desert. We looked at the biggest and coldest, Antarctica, and then took a closer look at the hotter deserts and their inhabitants.

The children enjoyed the different desert areas set up around Nursery, in the letter room, our small world tray was a home to camels, small fennec foxes, snakes, lizards, tortoises and many cacti. Our nook under the stairs became a place for explorers to investigate a variety of Australian wildlife living around Uluru.

We ended the week on a high – celebrating Founder’s Day, the school’s 71st anniversary, with a Leaders and Legends theme! The costumes were amazing and the day was enjoyed by all!

In Nursery we focused on the legendary Sir David Attenborough: British broadcaster, biologist, naturalist, natural historian, and writer.

Just like Sir David, we searched for exotic animals and explored habitats from where his four favourite creatures live!  In the letter room, our corner nook became a forest in South America, home to many monkeys. Our friendship tree became one of Sir David’s favourite places, Richmond, where in and around the pond his favoured minibeast, the dragonfly, lives.

On the other side of Nursery, we travelled to the southern hemisphere. Our nook under the stairs became a New Zealand bird sanctuary, home to Sir David’s favourite bird, a flightless parrot, the kākāpō. And in the number room we discovered his favourite sea creature, the weedy sea dragon, only found in the southern coastal waters of Australia and Tasmania.

During the day the children donned binoculars and magnifying glasses and were led by Claudia Winkelman, aka Miss Wilkinson, and followed clues through the school to find the kākāpō who had lost his way. Turns out he went to the office to visit Queen Elizabeth II.
