We had a fun filled week learning about snails and slugs! We discovered many amazing facts such as these one footed creatures have many teeth which are found on their tongues, they are nocturnal and snails hibernate during the winter months.
After a good search we found three snails and three slugs outside and set up terrariums for them to enjoy their stay in Nursery. All our visitors were very sociable gastropods, they seemed to be as curious of us as we were of them and thoroughly enjoyed the cucumber we gave them to snack on.
On Tuesday we celebrated St George’s Day. The children arrived to see the red and white bunting they made the day before hung up decorating Nursery along with red roses and robins. After being introduced to one of the many versions of the legend of ‘kind, brave and well mannered’ St George, the children enjoyed retelling their own versions with the story props, colouring pictures of knights, princesses and dragons and looking at story books about dragons. We all enjoyed a very English tea party with scones, cucumber sandwiches and strawberries!
There was many ‘s’ activities on offer in the letter room. The children enjoyed building – and smashing, sandcastles in the sand trough on the floor, there were lots of sea shells to explore and decorate their sandy constructions with. We kept the snail theme going with a trough full of green slime, home to a family of large stretchy snails and slippery slugs. Most were keen to experience the slime, for some it was the idea rather than the reality as we witnessed varying degrees of reactions once hands felt the texture!
For those who are game to try slime at home, the slime recipe is one cup of soap flakes to 2 cups of warm water beaten to a smooth frothy consistency. We added green food colouring for the extra visual experience!
In both rooms lashings of glue was used to make ‘s’ for suns, create circle works of art and collage snails, all with one circle shell!
