This week we continued our focus on caterpillars and butterflies. Under the stairs the Very Hungry Caterpillar and his friends remained a big hit as too the small world butterfly garden showing the life cycle of the butterfly.
We revisited the concept of what makes a pattern and many children enjoyed the challenge of completing and making more complex patterns.
In the letter room, the children made homes for the yaks and their shy Himalayan neighbour, the yeti. They created yellow art and drew characterful yellow yaks!
On Thursday it was the afternoon classes turn to visit Holland Park for our minibeast adventure at the Ecology Centre. Again, a lot of fun was had by all as we cautiously rolled logs over to see what creatures were nestled in and crawling over and under. There was much excitement when we also discovered a toad and a newt! The minibeasts were carefully swept into magnifying bottles and observed before gently being released back into the woodland. After our minibeast adventure, we all enjoyed an eagerly awaited picnic in the park!
Caterpillar Update: After a weekend of rest we carefully moved the chrysalides into the butterfly house for them to complete their metamorphosis. We have kept a close eye on them as they changed colour. Then on Thursday morning we watched the first butterfly emerge! On Friday there was great excitement when three more butterflies emerged. Now Nursery has the great responsibility of choosing names for them before they are released.
